Blogger – Annemarie Oorthuizen

Can you tell us something about yourself?
My name is Annemarie Oorthuizen (@sprankels) and I live in the centre of Delft with my partner Erik Laan (@eriklaan) and our daughter (2011). I have an academic background in educational sciences and currently I am involved in non-profit volunteer work for Delft MaMa and De Wereldwinkel Delft. My interests are numerous and range from psychology, science, reading, space travel, and politics to playing with my daughter, cooking, watching TV series, writing blog posts, and having coffee/tea/lunch/diner with family and friends. I am continuously seeking for new experiences and challenges to further enrich my life. And at the moment one of these new challenges is blogging for TEDxDelft!

What’s your job at TEDxDelft?
I will be blogging for TEDxDelft until the start of the event on the 7th of November. My blog posts will be posted on my personal blog and they will be mainly dedicated to Marcel Kampman and his Project Dreamschool and Musetta Blaauw.

What’s your favorite TED(x)talk?
A talk that I found impressive is that of Jill Bolte Taylor, who has survived a stroke and can now tell us exactly what that was like because she is a brain researcher and knew exactly what was going on when she experienced it. Another interesting talk is the one of Lesley Hazelton, “On reading the Koran”, she talks with a lot of humour about her thorough study on what is actually stated in the Koran and how much meaning is lost in translation and interpretation. A last fascinating TED talk that I want to mention is that of Theo Jansen, an artist from Delft who creates new creatures from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles.

What’s your idea worth spreading?
A wise saying I recently encountered and which I would like to share here is: “Every neighbour can be your teacher”. For me this means that if you are open minded towards the people around you, you actively listen, ask your questions, and notice their way in things, you can use this in your advantage and learn! Also be aware that this also works the other way around and people can learn from you.

Which keywords define you as a person?
Thorough, active, mother, social media, broad interests.
